Building Your Own AR-15 - Part 6 of 10 - The Charging Handle

Posted by KAT on 7th May 2015

An often-overlooked item is the charging handle. This handle allows you to charge the BCG with the buffer (and spring) and the initial round into the chamber (battery). The charging handle should not allow the BCG to be eased into battery instead, the BCG should be allowed to travel unimpeded into battery. If the bolt (BCG) has locked open after the last round, you should use the bolt release to charge the round from a full magazine.

The standard charging handle has a somewhat short latch but there are many custom-charging handles out there. Ambidextrous latches and oversized (tactical) types are available.
